Six Cypriot Athletes in Action on Final Day of Commonwealth Athletics

Five athletes contest athletics finals, while one competes in judo.

Six Cypriot athletes will be in action on Saturday, the final day of the athletics programme at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with five competing in athletics finals and one in the judo competition as Cyprus bids for top finishes and medals.

According to Cyprus Olympic Committee correspondent Elias Pratsos, Cyprus' athletics programme begins with the men's discus final at 1.50pm Cyprus time, where Iosif Michalis Papa will compete.

Papa enters the 13-man final with a season's best and personal best of 64.14 metres, the eighth-best mark among the finalists.

The evening session begins at 9.05pm with the men's pole vault final, where Dimitris Christofi and Christos Tamani will represent Cyprus.

Cyprus' team

Both vaulters have cleared a season's best of 5.35m and will compete in a field of 13 athletes. Australia's Kurtis Marschall, who has cleared 6.00m this season, enters the competition as one of the leading contenders.

At 9.10pm, Filippa Fotopoulou will contest the women's long jump final after progressing comfortably through qualifying despite competing in the earlier of the two qualification groups. If she matches or improves on her season's best of 6.78m, she could challenge for a place on the podium.

Cyprus' athletics campaign concludes at 9.35pm with Christiana Ellina in the women's javelin final. Competing in an eight-athlete field, Ellina will aim to surpass her season's best of 54.99m, which ranks eighth among the finalists.

In judo, Cyprus will be represented by Odysseas Georgakis in the men's under-81kg event. He is due to face India's Harsh Tokas in the quarter-finals of the 10-athlete competition.

The bout is expected to begin shortly after 2.00pm Cyprus time, with Georgakis aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals and keep his medal hopes alive.
