Forestry Department warns of extreme risk of wildfire outbreaks and spread.

Cyprus will remain under a Red Alert for the risk of wildfire outbreaks and rapid fire spread on Saturday, 1 August, the Department of Forests said on Friday.

In a statement, the department warned that the risk of both ignition and the spread of forest fires remained at the highest alert level.

It also reminded the public that causing a wildfire is a criminal offence under the Forests Law and the Prevention and Suppression of Rural Fires Law, carrying severe penalties.

The Department of Forests urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution during outdoor activities and to avoid any actions that could spark a fire.

Anyone who sees smoke or fire is urged to immediately call the Department of Forests on 1407 or the Fire Service on 112, the statement said.
