A number of high-profile criminal cases that have gripped Cyprus in recent years are set to remain in the spotlight as the new judicial year gets under way, with proceedings ranging from active trials and retrials to major pre-trial disputes.
Among the most closely watched cases are the retrial of Giorgos Christodoulou ("Zavrantonas"), proceedings against suspended Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos, the Central Prison confidential documents case, the private prosecutions linked to the death of Thanasis Nicolaou, as well as cases involving Metropolitan Isaias of Tamasos, the Avvakoum Monastery, the golden passports scandal and former Cyprus Football Association president Giorgos Koumas.
Zavrantonas retrial nearing final stages
The retrial of Giorgos Christodoulou is continuing before the Nicosia Criminal Court after the Court of Appeal overturned his 2022 conviction and 22-year prison sentence over more than 15kg of cocaine.
The case has focused heavily on testimony from key prosecution witness Yiannis Andreou ("Maronas"), as well as mobile phone evidence, communications records and digital data.
The defence has challenged the handling and preservation of electronic evidence and recently argued that Christodoulou's fair-trial rights were compromised because raw mobile phone files were not retained.
The next hearing is scheduled for 11 September.
Phedonos rape trial continues
Suspended Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos is standing trial over allegations dating back to 2014.
He has pleaded not guilty to five charges, including rape, indecent assault, assault causing actual bodily harm and administering a substance capable of overpowering resistance.
The trial is being heard behind closed doors and is due to continue on 10 September.
Central Prison documents case awaits ruling
One of the largest disclosure disputes in recent legal history remains unresolved in the case involving former Central Prison director Anna Aristotelous, former deputy director Athena Demetriou and six other defendants.
The case centres on the discovery of 48,432 state documents, more than 250,000 pages, architectural plans and electronic material allegedly removed from prison facilities.
The key issue remains disclosure of classified material to the defence.
A Criminal Court ruling over hundreds of still-disputed documents is expected on 22 September.
Thanasis Nicolaou prosecutions remain at pre-trial stage
The private prosecutions linked to the death of national guardsman Thanasis Nicolaou continue to generate significant public interest.
Five former officials face charges connected to the original investigation into Nicolaou's death, which was initially ruled a suicide but was later found during a third inquest to have resulted from strangulation.
Proceedings remain focused on pre-trial objections and challenges to the indictment.
The next court session is scheduled for 9 September.
Stylianos case continues
The trial concerning the death of 14-year-old Stylianos Constantinou, who was found dead in 2019, is continuing before Nicosia District Court.
The case involves the boy's parents, social welfare officers and a police sergeant.
Witness testimony has focused on what information state services possessed before the teenager's death and whether sufficient action was taken to protect him.
The hearing resumes on 14 September.
Avvakoum Monastery case advances
Former Archimandrites Nektarios and Porfyrios of the Avvakoum Monastery continue to face multiple charges, including conspiracy, forgery, money laundering and theft-related offences.
The court has already rejected several defence objections concerning evidence and searches.
Proceedings are scheduled to continue on 7 September.
Metropolitan Isaias cases
Separate proceedings involving Metropolitan Isaias of Tamasos remain pending.
One case concerns alleged data-protection violations linked to surveillance cameras and leaked video footage from Avvakoum Monastery.
Another relates to allegations involving insurance proceeds worth €32,000.
The data-protection case is scheduled to begin substantive hearings on 4 November.
German estate agent remains on trial
German estate agent Eva Isabella Kunzel remains before the courts over allegations connected to the promotion and sale of properties built on Greek Cypriot-owned land in the occupied north.
The case has already passed through several procedural challenges regarding her arrest and evidence gathering and is now in its substantive phase.
Golden passports trial to begin
The criminal case linked to the citizenship-by-investment scheme is due to enter its substantive hearing phase on 14 September.
Former Transport Minister Marios Demetriades and nine other defendants face charges including corruption, bribery, conspiracy, VAT fraud and money laundering.
The opening of the trial has already been postponed several times.
Koumas case set for November
Former Cyprus Football Association president Giorgos Koumas faces 25 charges relating to alleged conflicts of interest and money laundering connected to sports broadcasting rights between 2015 and 2025.
Koumas denies all charges.
The substantive hearing is scheduled to begin on 23 November 2026.
A pivotal year for the courts
With some cases approaching final submissions, others entering full trial proceedings and several still tied up in procedural disputes, the new judicial year is expected to be dominated by a series of closely watched legal battles.
As all proceedings remain before the courts, the presumption of innocence applies to all defendants unless and until guilt is established by judicial decision.
