DISY president Annita Demetriou met former party leader Averof Neophytou on Thursday, amid growing discussion within the party over the 2028 presidential election and the direction the party will take in the coming months.
According to Politis information, the meeting focused on developments in the Cyprus problem as well as internal party issues linked to the presidential race.
Internal elections discussed
The discussion reportedly included the possibility of internal DISY elections being held in January or February 2027, particularly in light of developments on the Cyprus issue and preparations for the next presidential contest.
Interest within the party has increasingly centred on both the intentions of key figures and the process that will be followed to select DISY's candidate for 2028.
Meeting held in good atmosphere
Particular significance is being attached to the atmosphere of the meeting.
According to Politis, the discussions took place in a notably positive climate, despite the differing public positions expressed by the two politicians in recent days.
Demetriou and Neophytou also agreed to meet again in the near future, signalling that communication channels remain open and that discussions on issues affecting the party will continue.
Different public messages
Earlier this week, speaking on Sigma TV's Protoselido, Demetriou reiterated that DISY would present its own political proposal in the 2028 presidential election and ruled out backing President Nikos Christodoulides.
She also stressed that while personal ambitions are legitimate, they should serve the interests of the party and that candidate selection must follow established party procedures.
Hours later, speaking to Omega TV, Neophytou linked his own decisions regarding 2028 directly to developments on the Cyprus issue.
He said that if a strategic framework for a settlement emerges, he would stand alongside President Christodoulides. He also questioned whether, in such a scenario, DISY would insist on fielding its own candidate rather than supporting an effort to achieve a Cyprus solution.
