Rescue teams in Nepal have successfully brought two workers out alive from an underground tunnel in the country's north, where they had been trapped since catastrophic flooding struck on 26 August, government ministers announced on Friday.
The dramatic rescue comes amid a wider disaster that has left hundreds dead and thousands missing.
Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha initially announced that one worker had been rescued from a tunnel at Trishuli-3.
"We learned that one person has just been brought out safely from the tunnel," he said.
Shortly afterwards, Interior Minister Sudan Gurung confirmed that a second worker had also been rescued.
"We have just learned that a second person has been saved," he said.
The successful operation marks a significant breakthrough in ongoing rescue efforts following the devastating floods that swept through parts of Nepal late last month.
The rescue has provided a measure of hope as authorities continue to deal with the consequences of one of the country's deadliest recent natural disasters.
