Newly appointed Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou has identified support for children, people with disabilities and families as the primary focus of her tenure.
Speaking after the announcement of her appointment, Pavlou described the day as particularly symbolic, coinciding with the feast of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, and wished "divine enlightenment for everyone".
Addressing her priorities in office, she said the welfare of children and people with disabilities would be central to her work, noting that these are issues with which she has been involved for many years.
"I want every family in Cyprus not to feel alone and to feel that it has the support of the state," she said, outlining the social focus she intends to bring to the deputy ministry.
Comments on Annita Demetriou
Asked about recent public statements by the Democratic Rally (DISY) and, in particular, comments made by party leader Annita Demetriou, Pavlou avoided expanding on the political aspects of the issue.
She said it was well known that she had received support from Demetriou over the years and that she both valued and continued to value that support.
Pavlou added that she had likewise stood by Demetriou, but declined to comment further on developments of recent days.
‘We spoke, perhaps not as much as she would have liked’
Referring to her relationship with the DISY leader, Pavlou said communication had taken place in recent days, although perhaps not to the extent Demetriou would have preferred.
"We have been in contact these past few days, perhaps not as much as she would have liked, but my appreciation and respect for her will never stop," the new Deputy Minister of Social Welfare said.
