US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every adult American if the Republican Party retains control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections scheduled for early November.
Speaking at a party event on Wednesday, Trump said the proposed payment would take the form of a "dividend" distributed to adult US citizens.
The pledge is tied to Republicans maintaining their majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate following the elections, which take place midway through Trump's second presidential term.
Trump also said the money would have to be spent exclusively within the United States.
No further details were immediately provided regarding how the programme would be funded, administered or implemented.
The announcement comes as campaigning intensifies ahead of the midterm vote, which will determine control of Congress for the remainder of the president's term.
