Bystanders Stop Kornos Forest Fire from Spreading

Nearby pedestrians extinguished a blaze in the Kornos forest before it could spread, leading police to arrest a 26-year-old man on suspicion of attempted arson

Police have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with an attempted arson at a forested area near Larnaca, which took place on 2 August 2026.

According to police, the incident was recorded at around 7pm on Sunday, when passers-by driving through the Kornos area saw two people getting into a car and leaving the scene. Within seconds, the passers-by noticed that a fire had broken out in a neighbouring wooded area. They intervened immediately and managed to put out the flames before the fire could spread.

During the course of the investigation, police secured testimony that led to the issuing of an arrest warrant against a 26-year-old man. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody. He is being investigated, among other offences, for conspiracy to commit a felony and attempted forest arson.

The man is expected to appear before Larnaca District Court tomorrow, where police will request a remand order.

The case is being investigated by Kofinou Regional Police Station.
