Paphos District Court has temporarily lifted the travel restrictions imposed on a 37-year-old British national, allowing him to travel to the United Kingdom to attend the funeral of his three-year-old son.
The court approved the request submitted by his defence lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, after considering both the humanitarian grounds and the procedural matters the defendant must handle in the UK as the child’s legal guardian.
Additional €10,000 guarantee imposed
The restrictions will be suspended from 7 August until 14 September 2026. The defendant’s travel documents will be returned two days before his departure, while his obligation to report to a police station will also be suspended during his absence.
The court imposed an additional €10,000 cash guarantee to secure his return to Cyprus. His name will also be temporarily removed from the list of people prohibited from leaving the country.
The prosecution, represented by Chrysο Perganti, did not object to the request. It asked, however, that the defendant provide police in writing with his UK address and contact details.
Restrictions return in September
All existing restrictions will automatically return on 15 September. These include a €20,000 guarantee, surrender of all travel documents, weekly reporting to Paphos Central Police Station, a ban on crossing through checkpoints, placement on the stop list and disclosure of his residential address to police.
The defendant must return to Cyprus before his next court appearance, which has been scheduled for 17 September at 09:00. He is expected to enter a plea after receiving the full evidential material in the case.
The 37-year-old appeared in court accompanied by his parents and lawyer.
Charge relates to child’s death
He faces a charge of causing death through a reckless, careless or dangerous act in connection with the death of his three-year-old son.
According to information, the child’s body has already been transferred to England, while the defendant’s wife and their five-year-old daughter have also travelled to the UK.
The Attorney-General previously instructed that the 37-year-old be prosecuted after reviewing the evidence gathered during the police investigation.
