Disy President Annita Demetriou has described the current period as a critical juncture for the Cyprus problem, particularly in view of the end of UN Secretary-General António Guterres' term. In a statement after the meeting of the National Council, Demetriou said the priority is to create the conditions for the resumption of substantive negotiations. She noted that the UN General Assembly did not produce the outcome the Greek Cypriot side would have wished for, but said there must nonetheless be persistence on substance, with real progress as the goal and without any ulterior motives.
Upcoming diplomatic steps
Turning to the next steps, Demetriou referred to the visit of UN envoy María Ángela Holguín in October and to the upcoming meeting of Raffaele Fitto, the European Commission's special representative for Cyprus, with the European Union on EU-Turkey relations. She said these developments should be used in combination with parallel diplomatic activity, describing this as the highest duty of all and calling for "less talk, more work and making use of every opportunity" that brings the island closer to the desired goal. The Disy leader added that the party's sense of responsibility is a given.
