YouTube is expanding its picture-in-picture feature to all users worldwide, allowing videos to continue playing in a small floating window even after leaving the app. The function had previously been available only to Premium subscribers.
The rollout will take place gradually over the coming months, meaning some users may see the option appear later than others.
How the feature works
The picture-in-picture mode enables a video to continue playing in a small movable window while the user navigates other apps on their device. Once activated, the mini player remains visible on the screen and can be repositioned, allowing users to multitask while watching content. To enable the function, users simply close the YouTube app by swiping up or pressing the home button. The video automatically continues playing in a smaller window.
Gradual global rollout
According to YouTube’s team, the feature will be introduced progressively over the coming months. As a result, it may take some time before it becomes available to every account. The rollout applies to both Android and iOS devices.
What remains exclusive to Premium
Picture-in-picture was first introduced for Premium subscribers in the United States in 2018 on Android and later in 2021 on iOS. Outside the United States, the feature will be available for long-form videos that are not music content.
Premium subscribers will continue to have an additional advantage, as they will still be able to use picture-in-picture for music videos.
