Anti-seismic upgrades in schools are 90% complete, the education ministry said.

There are no safety issues for any school unit, the Education Ministry Technical Services have noted,  following reports of buildings with structural instability.

According to a relevant statement, construction work in the framework of the anti-seismic upgrade programme has been completed at 90% of units across Cyprus, with technical and financial studies on-going on the rest of the school grounds.

'The studies are part of the ministry's comprohensive planning and establish objectively and scientifically whether the upgrade of a building is technically viable and cost effective or if its required to replace it,' the statement added.

They are being carried out, as noted, in the framework of ascertaining the service life of a unit within a policy of rational public infrastructure management, without safety risks.

The education ministry further stressed that the development budget and the relevant government commitments are moving forward based on specific financial estimates and approved works.

'Safety is the priority', they note, as authorities are upgrading and modernising public schools in an organised manner.
