The continuation of the Deputy Ministry's work, support for artists and the promotion of culture as a pillar of Cyprus' national identity were the key themes of the first address by new Deputy Minister of Culture Clea Hadjistefanou Papaellina during the handover ceremony.
Officially assuming her duties, Hadjistefanou Papaellina spoke of the responsibility accompanying her appointment.
"With great emotion and a deep sense of responsibility, I assume today the duties of Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus."
She thanked President Nikos Christodoulides for the trust he had placed in her and described culture as "the foundation of our country's identity, history and creative future".
Tribute to Vasiliki Kassianidou
The new deputy minister also expressed warm thanks to outgoing Deputy Minister of Culture Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou, recognising her contribution and work during her tenure.
"Every effort that strengthens culture, supports creative people and highlights our cultural heritage constitutes a valuable legacy for the future."
She stressed that the transition builds on what has already been achieved and marks the continuation of a collective effort aimed at delivering results through vision, consistency and cooperation.
‘A culture open to all’
Reflecting on the role of culture, Hadjistefanou Papaellina described it as:
"The expression of a people's soul, the bridge that connects the past with the present and the future, the force that cultivates creativity, dialogue and social cohesion in our society."
She added:
"Above all, it is our identity. What defines us today and determines us tomorrow."
Setting out her vision, she said her goal is:
"A culture open to all."
She explained that this means embracing every creator, supporting artistic expression, promoting Cyprus' cultural heritage and creating opportunities for younger generations to express themselves, create and participate actively.
Culture as a force for outreach
Hadjistefanou Papaellina also highlighted culture's role as a force for outward engagement, social cohesion and development, noting that it helps project Cyprus internationally.
"The protection and promotion of Cyprus' culture, both within and beyond our borders, form part of the struggle for the national survival of our homeland."
Call for cooperation
Emphasising that success depends on partnerships, the new deputy minister invited all stakeholders in the cultural sector to work together.
"I call on all creators, artists, cultural organisations, local authorities, the academic community and every entity that serves culture to work together in a spirit of trust and shared vision."
Working closely with ministry staff
Hadjistefanou Papaellina also paid tribute to the officials and staff of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, describing their experience, knowledge and dedication as a "valuable asset".
She said one of her priorities would be close cooperation with ministry personnel so their expertise can be fully utilised and conditions created for even more meaningful work.
The new deputy minister also expressed her intention to work closely with the ministry's Director General, George Papageorgiou.
"I look forward to a productive and close cooperation with Director General George Papageorgiou so that, through his valuable knowledge and experience, we can turn plans into action."
Commitment to service
Concluding her remarks, Hadjistefanou Papaellina pledged to carry out her duties with responsibility, transparency, diligence and respect for all.
She expressed confidence that through collective effort the role of culture in Cypriot society can be further strengthened and that Cyprus' cultural creativity will continue to inspire, evolve and gain recognition.
