New Safety Systems to Be Mandatory in All New Cars From July

New EU rules will require all newly registered vehicles to include advanced driver assistance and safety technologies.

A new phase in road safety is set to begin across the European Union, with stricter vehicle safety requirements coming into force from 7 July 2026. From that date, every new car registered in the EU will need to be equipped with a range of integrated safety systems designed to reduce accidents and improve driver awareness.

One of the most visible changes concerns brake lights. During sudden braking, rear lights will now flash rapidly instead of remaining steady, offering a clearer warning to following drivers and helping to reduce reaction times.

The measure forms part of a broader effort to address one of the most common types of accidents on European roads, rear-end collisions. Even marginal improvements in driver response time are expected to have a meaningful impact on overall road safety.

Additional systems introduced under the new rules

The flashing brake lights are only one element of a wider package of mandatory safety features.

From July 2026, all new vehicles will also be required to include automatic emergency braking systems capable of intervening in the event of a potential collision, lane-keeping assistance, and driver monitoring systems that detect fatigue or loss of attention. Vehicles will also be fitted with intelligent speed assistance technology.

In addition, all new cars will be equipped with event data recorders, which store key information in the event of an accident. There will also be pre-installation for alcohol interlock systems, allowing vehicles to prevent ignition if the driver has consumed alcohol.

The new standards are expected to significantly enhance road safety by improving reaction times and providing early warnings in critical situations. At the same time, they introduce greater levels of data recording and electronic monitoring, marking a gradual shift in the nature of driving.

The rules apply to all vehicles registered after July 2026.
