Pakistan's army chief, Asim Munir, will travel to Tehran on Monday, Iran's foreign ministry has announced, as Islamabad works to mediate a resolution to the war in the Middle East.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a statement on Sunday that Munir will lead a delegation to the Iranian capital "as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Iran and Pakistan."
The visit is also part of "Pakistan's continuing efforts to help strengthen peace and security in the region," the statement said.
Pakistan has played a decisive role in efforts to end the war between Iran and the United States, having mediated a memorandum of understanding in June, though the peace talks currently appear to be at a standstill.
Earlier this month, Pakistan signed a joint defence agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, a move that, according to some analysts, was aimed at countering Iranian influence.
