Ankara says the 2019 Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum is consistent with international law and strengthens bilateral cooperation.

Turkey has welcomed the decision by Libya's House of Representatives to approve the Turkey-Libya Memorandum of Understanding on maritime jurisdiction zones, which was originally signed in 2019.

The Libyan parliament approved the agreement on 20 October, prompting a positive response from Ankara.

In a statement, Turkey argued that the memorandum is based on the principles of international law and equity, and takes into account the mutual rights and interests of both countries.

According to the Turkish government, the agreement contributes to the further deepening of cooperation between Turkey and Libya.

Ankara defends legality of agreement

Turkey maintained that the memorandum respects international legal principles and serves the shared interests of both states.

The Turkish statement described the agreement as a framework that strengthens bilateral relations and cooperation between Ankara and Tripoli.

Commitment to Mediterranean stability

The statement concluded with a broader political message, with Turkey saying it remains committed to working with all partners to ensure security, stability and peace in the Mediterranean.

According to Ankara, this effort is being pursued in line with its commitment to respecting international law.

The reaction comes amid continued objections from Cyprus, Greece and the European Union, which have repeatedly challenged the validity of the Turkey-Libya maritime agreement.
