Flights at Catania Airport in Sicily were suspended on Saturday because of volcanic ash from continuing activity at Mount Etna, combined with adverse weather conditions, the airport operator said.
All arrivals at the airport, the fifth busiest in Italy by passenger traffic, have been suspended until 1pm Greece and Cyprus time on Sunday.
Volcanic ash disrupts air travel
Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano, frequently causes disruption to flights serving Catania because of volcanic ash.
Ash emissions have been particularly intense this summer, causing significant problems for air travel and affecting thousands of passengers during the peak holiday season.
The latest volcanic activity has again disrupted operations at one of Sicily’s main transport hubs, with passengers due to travel through Catania advised to monitor their flight status.
