DIKO president Nikolas Papadopoulos has credited the Greek government for securing investment interest in the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, while signalling that the Republic of Cyprus must now meet its own commitments.
In a social media post, Papadopoulos said that "congratulations are due to the Greek government for the investment interest it has achieved for the GSI", adding that "Cyprus must now honour its own obligations."
Hint of criticism towards Nicosia
While not directly criticising the Christodoulides administration, Papadopoulos' remarks appeared to contain an implicit message to the government regarding Cyprus' responsibilities towards the project.
His intervention came following the announcement that French infrastructure investment group Meridiam had acquired a 66% stake in the electricity interconnection project between Greece and Cyprus.
Strategic importance of the project
Papadopoulos noted that, ultimately, the electricity interconnection project would be constructed for the benefit of Cypriot consumers.
He suggested that the implementation of the project is a matter of strategic importance for the country, underscoring the potential role of the interconnector in strengthening Cyprus' energy security and ending its electrical isolation.
