With four requests on the agenda, DIKO’s expanded Secretariat, including the party’s two ministers, was received by President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday afternoon, at a particularly crucial moment for relations between the Government and the Democratic Party.
During the meeting, which lasted approximately two and a half hours, DIKO leader Nikolas Papadopoulos asked the President of the Republic for a more active role for his party in decisions relating to a Cabinet reshuffle, the appointment of chairpersons and members of the boards of semi-governmental organisations, as well as decisions concerning the utilisation of DIKO officials within the government.
According to information, Papadopoulos requested that DIKO be allocated additional ministries beyond those it currently holds, along with more positions and chairmanships on the boards of semi-governmental organisations.
He also asked that the party have a say in which individuals are appointed from its ranks. Papadopoulos noted that the final decision belongs to the President himself, but expressed the wish for consultations to take place beforehand.
Staying in government, but...
According to information, the DIKO leader expressed his desire for the party to remain part of the governing coalition, arguing that the presentation of the government's work had helped in the parliamentary elections.
At the same time, however, he called for changes that would leave a political imprint on the road to the 2028 presidential election.
The letter sent by Nikolas Papadopoulos on Tuesday evening, which was revealed by Politis, contributed to the postponement of the scheduled Cabinet meeting and the related announcements by one day.
Through his letter, and on repeated occasions, DIKO, through its president, has raised concerns regarding the manner in which the coalition operates and the nature of its cooperation with the Presidency.
Papadopoulos has repeatedly stated that the level of coordination and communication with both the Presidential Palace and Nikos Christodoulides was not what had been expected.
His decision to send a letter to the Presidency and immediately seek a meeting with the President demonstrates a determination to secure a more substantive role for DIKO in government decisions and in shaping government policy.
The move is particularly significant given that DIKO is the only parliamentary party participating in the coalition government.
An eye on 2028
The Cabinet reshuffle and appointments to semi-governmental organisations are expected to reveal the intentions of both President Christodoulides and the DIKO leader as the country moves towards the 2028 presidential election.
Despite DIKO’s dissatisfaction with decisions taken by the government without prior consultation, any accommodation of the party’s demands regarding ministerial appointments and appointments to semi-governmental bodies would likely prolong the coalition partnership and prevent a political 'divorce.'
At the same time, such a development would put an end to speculation and clarify the political landscape regarding DISY, with which a possible avenue of cooperation has remained open, a scenario that Papadopoulos himself has not ruled out.
