The Central Committee of Cyprus’ EDEK party has decided not to accept the resignation of its leader, Nikos Anastasiou, following a meeting held in the aftermath of the party’s poor electoral performance and its failure to secure representation in the new parliament.
Anastasiou had placed his resignation at the disposal of the party’s governing bodies, assuming political responsibility for EDEK’s inability to win seats in the recent parliamentary elections.
At the beginning of the meeting, he said he had already been considering stepping down since election night. However, he opted not to take an immediate decision, arguing that the matter should be decided collectively by the Central Committee.
Following discussion and exchanges of views among members of the party’s highest decision-making body, the resignation was ultimately rejected, allowing Mr Anastasiou to remain in the leadership of EDEK.
The session also focused on an assessment of the election result and the party’s next steps following its significant political setback at the ballot box. Internal discussions within EDEK are expected to continue in the coming period.
