Two young swimmers were brought safely ashore after being swept into deeper water off Limassol while attempting to retrieve a drifting ball. The swift intervention of two lifeguards prevented them from drowning.
Swept into deeper water
The incident occurred at approximately 16:15 on Monday, 10 August, in lifeguard zone LEM 0, opposite Limassol Zoo, according to the Limassol Lifeguard Unit.
The pair, both aged 18 and of African origin, were swimming within the supervised area when they attempted to reach a ball that had drifted away.
Strong winds and sea currents carried them towards an area where the seabed drops sharply, placing them at immediate risk of drowning.
Lifeguards intervene
Two lifeguards stationed at the LEM 0 tower spotted the swimmers in difficulty and entered the water with a rescue board.
One lifeguard pulled both swimmers onto the board and began towing them towards the shore. Due to the challenging conditions, the second lifeguard immediately joined the operation, helping bring the pair safely back to land.
Both swimmers were found to be in good health and did not require medical or hospital treatment.
Warning to swimmers
The Limassol Lifeguard Unit urged members of the public to exercise particular caution while swimming, follow lifeguards’ instructions and avoid pursuing objects that drift out to sea, especially during adverse weather conditions.
