A 44-year-old convict is suspected of directing the attack from Central Prisons, according to evidence presented in court.

Limassol District Court has ordered the five-day detention of a 44-year-old prison inmate in connection with an arson attack on a betting shop in the early hours of June 1.

Police told the court that the suspect was allegedly named by one of two 20-year-olds already under eight-day detention in the same case.

According to investigators, the inmate is suspected of having issued instructions from Central Prisons for the arson attack on the betting shop, as well as for a separate fire at a car sales business.

The investigating officer said police are also examining whether the 44-year-old may be linked to other criminal acts committed recently.

The court approved the police request for his detention, after which the suspect was taken back to Central Prisons.
