Cyprus Police have launched an investigation into reported threats against House Speaker Annita Demetriou, confirming they are treating the case with “due seriousness” and have already taken steps to ensure her safety.

In an official statement, police said they had begun examining the complaints and remained in continuous contact with relevant security officials, implementing all necessary measures deemed appropriate under the circumstances.

The development follows the emergence of threatening messages sent to the offices of the Democratic Rally (DISY) earlier this week. The emails, received on June 3, reportedly referred to a possible assassination attempt against Demetriou, prompting immediate notification of her security detail and the authorities.

Police chief intervenes

Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis personally contacted Demetriou by telephone on the evening prior to the announcement, according to the police statement. During the call, the two discussed both the alleged threats and issues related to handling information surrounding the case.

Authorities have declined to release further details at this stage, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Ongoing investigation and security response

Officers visited DISY headquarters shortly after the emails were received and collected relevant evidence, while the credibility of the threats remains under assessment.

Police reiterated that any report involving threats to individuals is subject to immediate evaluation and is investigated with the seriousness required by the circumstances.

While it remains unclear whether additional security measures have been publicly implemented, authorities indicated that all appropriate actions are being taken, potentially including discreet protective steps.

The case continues to develop as investigators work to determine the origin and credibility of the messages.
