Police are investigating a threatening email concerning the safety of House President and DISY leader Annita Demetriou, which was received at the party’s offices on June 3.
The existence of the message was confirmed by DISY spokesman Onoufrios Koullas, speaking on the television programme Protoselido. According to Koullas, the email contained information about a possible assassination attempt against Demetriou.
He said that immediately after the message was received, Demetriou’s security detail was informed and proceeded with the required actions, including notifying police.
“I hope that what the email says is not true and that such a criminal act could not take place,” Koullas said, expressing hope that the content of the message would not prove to be credible.
According to the DISY spokesman, police officers went to the party’s offices and collected all relevant evidence. The assessment of the credibility and seriousness of the threat, as well as any decision on additional security measures, now rests with the competent authorities.
Koullas also expressed concern over the leak of the case to the public, noting that only a very limited number of people were aware of the email.
“What surprises us is how it was leaked. I want to hope that it did not come from the police,” he said.
Asked whether additional security measures had been taken for Demetriou, Koullas said he had not been informed, leaving open the possibility that the authorities may have already taken discreet steps without making them public.
He stressed that every threat of violence must be treated with absolute seriousness and in line with the required protocols, while expressing hope that the incident would prove to be a hoax.
