US geological authorities warn dangerous waves are possible along coasts within 300 kilometres of the epicentre.

Where the earthquake struck

The quake was recorded near Puerto Madero, a port and fishing town on the Pacific Ocean, approximately 13 kilometres from the border with Guatemala. According to the USGS, the earthquake had a focal depth of 10 kilometres.

Tsunami risk in the Pacific

US geological authorities said there is a risk of a tsunami for areas of the Pacific located close to the epicentre. They noted that dangerous tsunami waves are possible along coasts within a distance of up to 300 kilometres from the epicentre.

No reports of casualties so far

There are no reports of casualties or extensive damage at this stage, while the authorities are monitoring developments.
