President Christodoulides has made clear that the Nicosia six-point plan on Gaza is not a stab at political mediation, but a model of 'implementational contribution', codified in six working pillars and building on the successful operational capacity of the 'Amaltheia' humanitarian corridor.
During a working dinner held between European leaders and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi in Brussels last night, marking the first ever EU-Egypt Summit, Christodoulides presented the Cyprus proposal, officially introduced at the Sharm El Sheikh Summit on Gaza earlier this month, where the first phase of a peace agreement was signed.
Αccording to a written statement by the Director of the President's Press Office Victoras Papadopoulos, Christodoulides explained that he was looking for logistical support of the plan, which aims to contribute towards Gaza's viability and respect Israel's security concerns.
'During this historic summit, the President referred to the role that Cyprus can play in implementing the Trump peace plan', Papadopoulos noted.
To this end, Christodoulides added, the Republic of Cyprus has proposed a model of 'implementational contribution' based on the success of the Amaltheia plan, working through a bilateral security mechanism and in cooperation with the UAE and UNOPS, the international organisation's operational arm.
The Cyprus President further talked about the significance of the Mediterranean Treaty, the new EU strategy on the South Region. He stressed that this framework of cooperation is not just limited to assistance or development programmes, but 'looks to upgrade the Mediterranean as a region of strategic integration between Europe, the Middle East and Africa'.
He underlined that the Treaty's implementation and the deepening of EU ties with the South Region, including Egypt, has now become one of the top Cyprus Presidency priorities.
President Christodoulides, as his press office concludes, 'praised Egypt's critical stabilising role in Gaza and Middle East peace efforts', encouraging Brussels to support the country's macroeconomic stability, in coordination with the IMF and to this end, taking into account the Union's strategic interests.
