Pope Leo delivered a sharp rebuke of global leaders, warning that the world is being “ravaged by a handful of tyrants” and condemning the vast sums spent on warfare.

Remarks come after renewed criticism from Donald Trump on social media

Speaking from Cameroon, the first American pope criticised political figures who justify conflict using religious rhetoric and called for a decisive shift in global priorities. His remarks come after renewed criticism directed at him by US President Donald Trump on social media.

Addressing a gathering in the country’s largest anglophone city, he said world leaders were ignoring the devastating human cost of war.

“Those who wage war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild,” he said.

He added that billions are being channelled into violence while essential resources for recovery, education and healing remain scarce.

“Leaders turn a blind eye to the fact that enormous sums are spent on killing and destruction, while the means needed for restoration and human development are nowhere to be found,” he said.

The pope’s unusually direct language underscores growing concern within the Vatican over escalating global conflicts and the political narratives used to sustain them.
