Cyprus’ Road Transport Department has warned of dangerous airbags of Chinese origin following an urgent alert issued by US authorities. While there is currently no indication that the airbags are present in Cyprus, importers, sellers and vehicle owners are being urged to remain vigilant and to notify the department if such products have entered the local market.

US safety alert prompts local warning

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued an urgent warning concerning hazardous and illegal airbags manufactured in China. According to the US authority, ten road accidents in the United States have resulted in death or serious injury after replacement airbags ruptured violently during collisions. The airbags were manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co (DTN).

Risks linked to replacement airbags

The replacement airbags, typically installed in vehicles following previous road accidents, may malfunction upon deployment. In the event of a collision, the airbags may rupture and project metal fragments, posing a serious risk of fatal or severe injuries to vehicle occupants.

Call to importers and sellers in Cyprus

The Road Transport Department has called on all importers and sellers who may have distributed, or may still be distributing, the specific airbags in Cyprus to inform the department without delay. Authorities underline that economic operators are required to take appropriate measures under the applicable legislation, including initiating product recalls where necessary.

Guidance for vehicle owners and consumers

Consumers who believe their vehicle may be fitted with the specific replacement airbags are urged to contact their mechanic, auto technician or seller for clarification and to inform the Road Transport Department accordingly.

The department notes that, to date, there is no evidence that the airbags have been installed in vehicles in Cyprus.
