Rare sighting captured near one of Venice’s best-known landmarks

A dolphin has been spotted swimming in the waters of the Venice lagoon near the city’s famous Rialto Bridge, the city’s mayor said on Friday.

Footage shared on social media by Mayor Simone Venturini shows a fin repeatedly emerging from the surface of the canal. The video was filmed on Thursday.

“A dolphin at the Rialto Bridge,” Venturini wrote in a post on Instagram.

The mayor added that the marine mammal had also been spotted in the Grand Canal, Venice’s main waterway, which stretches for around 3.8 kilometres through the city.

The unexpected sighting comes as the dolphin was seen swimming through the waterways of one of Italy’s most famous tourist destinations, passing close to the historic centre of Venice.
