A 59-year-old man is being treated in serious condition at the Nicosia General Hospital following an e-scooter accident in Paralimni during the early hours this morning, authorities have confirmed.

According to a relevant police statement, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on central Pernera Avenue when the man lost control of the scooter under as yet unidentified circumstances.

The vehicle struck a road barrier, overturned, and the rider ended up on the pavement.

Emergency services rushed the victim to Famagusta General Hospital, where medical staff diagnosed multiple severe injuries to his head and torso, including craniocerebral trauma, lung contusion, and fractured ribs.

Given the severity of his injuries and the need for more specialised treatment, he was subsequently transferred to Nicosia General Hospital, where attending physicians continue to describe his condition as serious.

The Paralimni CID has opened an investigation into the accident and is working to determine the exact circumstances that led the man to the loss of control.

E-scooters have become increasingly popular but safety concerns, the lack of effective regulation, notwithstanding a debate on whether they are actually a vehicle or not and a string of accidents on busy roads, have raised calls to abolish their use.
