The share of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion in Cyprus stood at 17.1% in 2025, according to data released on Thursday by Eurostat.
In total, around 167,000 people in Cyprus were affected. The rate remained unchanged compared with 2024, although the number of individuals increased by approximately 3,000.
By gender, around 75,000 men (15.5%) and 93,000 women (18.7%) were recorded as being at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2025.
Across the European Union, 92.7 million people, or 20.9% of the population, were at risk in 2025. This marked a slight decrease compared with 2024, when the figure stood at 21.0%, or 93.3 million people. Of those affected, 43.0 million were men and 49.7 million were women.
According to Eurostat, individuals are classified as being at risk if they live in households facing at least one of three conditions: risk of poverty, severe material and social deprivation, or very low work intensity.
Variations across EU member states
The highest rates in the EU were recorded in Bulgaria (29.0%), Greece (27.5%) and Romania (27.4%). The lowest rates were observed in Czechia (11.5%), Poland (15.0%) and Slovenia (15.5%).
The Eurostat data provide a snapshot of social conditions across EU member states in 2025, based on indicators of poverty risk and social exclusion.
