At least 128 people, 73 of them minors, were arrested in Barcelona overnight from Saturday to Sunday, mainly for vandalism, damage to public spaces and looting, according to a statement from the Catalan police. The head of the Mossos d’Esquadra, Sílvia Catà, told 3CatInfo that police are drawing up reports to be sent to the juvenile prosecutor’s office and, for the adults, to the competent court. Videos posted on social media show groups of young people, many dressed in black, running through the streets and attacking shops. They had earlier gathered in a large square in the city centre for a protest that had not been notified to the authorities.
Police injured as investigators study profiles
Catà said only two of those arrested had a criminal record. During the night, 14 members of the Catalan police and one member of Barcelona’s municipal police were injured. “This is unprovoked violence,” she said, adding that her services are trying to analyse the profile of those arrested. The individuals, she said, were completely disorganised but had coordinated through social media.
