Turkey has issued a new NAVTEX for scientific research and subsea studies at 12 designated coordinates in the Mediterranean, in the sea area between Turkey and the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus. The notice was issued by the Antalya station on 23 October and covers work from 26 October to 31 December 2026. According to the website of Turkish state broadcaster TRT, the research vessel Denar Pathfinder, along with the Denar Echo, Denar Explorer and Kırıcı, will take part in the surveys. The NAVTEX calls on seafarers passing through the area to keep a safe distance from the vessels.
A gas pipeline to the north
In a report, TRT Haber said the planned natural gas pipeline between Turkey and the north is intended to carry gas from Turkey to the island in the future and to strengthen the security of energy supply in the north. Following the construction of the undersea water pipeline from Turkey to the north, the report said, the project is regarded as one of the major steps in upgrading energy infrastructure between what it called “the two countries”. The notice states that the NAVTEX will expire on 31 December 2026.
