Pope Leo XIV spent a peaceful night after undergoing surgery to remove a lung adenocarcinoma, the Vatican Press Office said on Wednesday.
Late on Tuesday, surgeons led by Stefano Margaritora removed the lower lobe of the pontiff's right lung after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Brother: "It was serious, but they removed it"
The Pope's elder brother, Louis Prevost, told US media that doctors had discovered a serious condition but were able to remove it entirely.
"What the doctors found was serious, but they managed to remove it completely," he said.
Discharge expected within days
According to medical projections, Pope Leo is expected to leave hospital within four to five days.
A seven-member medical team overseeing the Pope's treatment is expected to provide a further update on his condition later on Wednesday.
Vatican monitoring recovery
The Vatican said the pontiff's post-operative recovery is continuing under medical supervision following the successful procedure.
