Heavy black smoke rose over central Kyiv on Friday after a Russian drone attack struck a building in the historic heart of the city, according to Reuters. The city's mayor said the building hit was non-residential. Numerous ambulances and emergency services were reported heading to the scene, close to Saint Sophia Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Damage and reaction on the ground
Reuters reported that the owner of a popular bakery, Zavertailo, said on Telegram that the business's building had been destroyed in the attack. One woman was reported shouting into her phone that she had stepped out to buy cigarettes and been startled by the explosion.
A resident identified only as Oleh, 33, who declined to give his surname, told Reuters that he expected the attacks to continue. "I think (people) can get used to this. In the centre of Kyiv, and in the centre of Moscow. It will get worse, I believe this," he said.
Part of a wider pattern of strikes
According to Reuters, Kyiv has been under continuous Russian drone attack for 10 days. A university in the city centre was also hit on Wednesday, Reuters reported, part of what has been a sustained campaign against the Ukrainian capital in recent days.
