Bulgaria’s Centre for Assisted Reproduction supported treatments that resulted in the birth of 1,397 children in 2025, according to information provided by the Health Ministry’s press office to the Bulgarian News Agency.
During the first half of 2026, the Centre approved funding for 2,598 assisted reproduction procedures, based on its reports for the first two quarters of the year.
Funding for fertility treatments
The Bulgarian Health Ministry allocated 22 million Bulgarian leva, equivalent to €11.25 million, in its 2025 budget to provide organisational and financial support to Bulgarian citizens undergoing infertility treatment, primarily through assisted reproduction techniques.
The Ministry said there were no delays in payments to healthcare facilities working with the Centre during 2025. A total of 21,767,195 leva was paid to participating medical institutions.
The draft state budget for 2026 also provides for €11.25 million to support Bulgarian citizens receiving infertility treatment.
Applications and spending in 2026
During the first quarter of 2026, the Centre received 1,291 applications and approved funding for 1,222 procedures. Spending on assisted reproduction procedures during the period reached €1,902,633.09.
In the second quarter, it received 1,394 applications and approved 1,376 procedures, with total expenditure reaching €2,950,688.
Treatment limits and eligibility
The Centre provides funding of up to 6,000 leva per procedure and covers a maximum of four assisted reproduction treatment cycles.
Women under the age of 43 may apply, provided they are Bulgarian citizens or permanent residents of Bulgaria and meet the criteria for financial assistance for assisted reproduction.
Before applying to the Centre, applicants must select an assisted reproduction clinic that has a contract with the institution.
