The seven-minute first episode, made with Grok Imagine, was released on X and met a lukewarm reception from viewers.

Three months after promising a full-length film based on Homer’s epic, Elon Musk has unveiled seven minutes of his own “Odyssey”, created with the artificial intelligence tool Grok Imagine. The first episode was released on X on Friday, 23 October, as part of a series being produced with the help of AI, Greek news site Lifo reports, citing Variety and TechCrunch.

What the first episode shows

The video, around seven minutes long, shows Odysseus preparing to leave for Troy. Penelope gives him a small wooden horse for their son, followed by scenes of the Greeks preparing for war, the battles at Troy and Telemachus growing up.

The episode was produced in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, who specialise in creating audiovisual content with AI.

From a feature film to a series

Last July, shortly after the cinema release of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey”, Musk announced that Grok Imagine would complete his own film by the end of 2026.

He insisted that his version would be “historically accurate” and faithful to Homer’s art, sharing at the time a three-minute video created by a user of the tool. The statement drew criticism, with “Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson publicly challenging Musk’s views on cinema.

Musk’s criticism of Nolan’s film

The announcement followed repeated attacks by Musk on Nolan’s film, mainly over the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and of Elliot Page. The businessman accused the director of making his choices to meet inclusion criteria that, in his view, are linked to the Oscars.

Nolan defended his choices and rejected the idea that artificial intelligence could replace human creativity in filmmaking.

A lukewarm reception

The first episode was not warmly received. Media reports and viewer comments pointed to the stiff performances of the digital characters and the video’s failure to hold attention, despite the striking visuals of some scenes.

Unanswered questions

It remains unclear how the new series relates to the original promise of a feature film. Neither Grok Imagine nor Musk has announced how many episodes are planned, when they will be released or whether the end-2026 deadline for completing the project still stands.
