Stefanos Stefanou says CyBC failed to cover events attended by diplomats, Turkish Cypriot parties and representatives of more than 30 political parties.

AKEL general secretary Stefanos Stefanou has strongly criticised Cyprus’s public broadcaster CyBC (RIK) over its absence from events marking the 100th anniversary of the party’s founding.

In a social media post, Stefanou expressed his anger after RIK failed to cover a major anniversary event held on Tuesday evening, which he said was attended by a large crowd, ambassadors, Turkish Cypriot parties and delegations representing more than 30 political parties from around the world.

He described the broadcaster’s stance as “unacceptable and shameful”, accusing it of once again failing to fulfil its role as a public service broadcaster.

Failure

Stefanou said the lack of coverage continued on Wednesday, with RIK also failing to report on an all-day international symposium organised by AKEL.

The symposium focused on the contemporary world and the role of the Left, bringing together participants for discussions on international developments and political issues.

“[RIK] did not see, did not hear, did not cover,” Stefanou said, referring to the previous evening’s anniversary celebrations. He repeated the same criticism in relation to the symposium.

The AKEL leader argued that the broadcaster’s actions amounted to another failure to uphold its public service responsibilities, adding that it was effectively ignoring Cyprus’s oldest political party.
