The sides are making final preparations for the November 9 trilateral meeting involving President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguín.
Sources familiar with the process told CNA that preparations are continuing along the lines set out in recent months, including after UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ visit to Cyprus last July. The issues include crossing points, the environment and the exchange of archives. CNA was also informed that Ms Holguín postponed meetings scheduled for today with the Municipalities of Famagusta and Morphou, which are expected to take place on Tuesday.
A key issue in the preparations is the opening of new crossing points to and from the occupied areas of Cyprus. Environmental matters and the prospect of exchanging archival material are also on the agenda.
According to the information, the material includes documents and photographs relating to either the Greek Cypriot or the Turkish Cypriot community, which remained on either side of the ceasefire line after 1974. Digital technology now makes it possible to archive and preserve the material on both sides, while the originals would be returned to the community to which they relate.
