DISY leader Annita Demetriou has voiced strong concern over recent remarks by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the Cyprus problem, while taking aim at what she described as "petty politics," "erratic moves" and appointments.
Demetriou's intervention follows Guterres's statement that no meeting in a 3+1 or 5+1 format will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, as he said "there is still a lot of work to be done." Guterres also stressed that any new meeting would need to be prepared in a way that creates genuine prospects for a result, adding that "the mistakes of the past" must not be repeated.
"I am particularly concerned by the UN Secretary-General's recent statements that he does not see the developments that would allow a five-party, or even a three-party, meeting on the Cyprus problem to be convened on the sidelines of the General Assembly in New York," Demetriou wrote in her statement.
'The priority must be one'
Demetriou stressed that, with Guterres's term drawing to a close, the Greek Cypriot side's priority must be singular: creating the conditions for a genuine resumption of negotiations.
"Let us focus, then, on the substance of how we bring results. Let us do what needs to be done to see real developments," she said.
The final part of her statement carried particular political weight, taking clear aim at how the domestic political debate is unfolding.
"The last thing we should be preoccupied with right now is petty politics, erratic moves and appointments. All of this takes us further away from what we actually need," she said.
