Officials cite open channels with Iran after a Financial Times report named Akrotiri as a possible target.

Cyprus remains a pillar of stability amid the conflict affecting the wider region and is not contributing to military escalation, government sources have said.

Their comments came in response to a Financial Times report citing Iranian sources, which identified Cyprus, and specifically the British military base at Akrotiri, as a possible target for Iran.

Cyprus’ regional role

Government sources stressed that the Republic of Cyprus has consistently served as a pillar of stability, security and cooperation, as well as a bridge between the European Union and the wider Middle East.

They added that the Republic maintains open diplomatic channels with Iran, through which it has clearly communicated its positions and the country’s role in the region.

Commitment to diplomacy

The sources said Cyprus has chosen, and will continue to pursue, diplomacy and de-escalation, given its own experience of military invasion by Turkey and its consequences.

Although they did not directly address the claims in the Financial Times report, the sources confirmed that communication with the Iranian government remains open and conveyed no immediate concern.
