The Democratic Rally (DISY) has urged the government to adopt a clear and unified position on the Great Sea Interconnector, arguing that the involvement of French investment group Meridiam has brought fresh momentum to the project.
The party also called for closer coordination with Athens and criticised AKEL over its stance on the electricity interconnection.
Meridiam brings new momentum
In a statement, DISY said Meridiam’s entry into the GSI adds new momentum to a project recognised as important by the European Union, the United States, Greece, Israel and France.
Despite this, the party claimed that both the government and AKEL continue to approach the project inconsistently.
‘More than an energy project’
DISY said the GSI extends well beyond the scope of a conventional energy project.
“It is a project of strategic importance that strengthens Cyprus’ geopolitical position, its strategic alliances, the country’s energy adequacy and security, and places it firmly on the energy map of the wider region, with enormous national benefits,” the party said.
It called on the government to end contradictory statements by its members and establish a clear, unified position on the project.
DISY also urged Nicosia to coordinate fully with the Greek government to advance the interconnector.
DISY seeks EIB financing
The party called on the government to work with Athens and Brussels to secure long-term, low-interest financing from the European Investment Bank.
Concluding its statement, DISY renewed its criticism of the government and AKEL, saying: “It is time for the government and AKEL to understand the strategic importance of the GSI for the Republic of Cyprus.”
