A cinematic evening dedicated to the transformation of urban landscapes and the challenges facing contemporary cities will be presented by The Island Club in collaboration with the Limassol International Documentary Festival on Friday, 7 August 2026, at 8.30pm in the Ceronia Hall of the Evagoras Lanitis Centre.
Titled The Urban Condition: An Expanded Screening, the event brings together a diverse programme of archival material, artists' films, music videos, live music and performance, taking as its starting point the ongoing transformation and gentrification of Cyprus' urban landscape.
Approaching their subjects with both a critical and playful perspective, participating artists explore themes including everyday urban life, belonging, housing inequality, the climate crisis and war, connecting Cypriot experiences with wider regional and international realities.
The evening is curated by Androula Kafa. Screenings will be followed by a discussion with the curator and participating artists. The event will conclude with a Friday Night Afterparty at Tapper Bar, featuring music by burrower, Diggers and DJ Katta.
From experimental cinema to contemporary urban experience
The programme features eight works from Cyprus and abroad exploring different aspects of the urban condition.
Among the highlights is the restored experimental short film FYGI (Escape) (1968) by Andreas Constantinides, recovered from the digital archive of CyBC, which captures early concerns about urbanisation and the relationship between people and the natural environment.
Other featured works include #31# (APPEL MASQUE) by Ghyzlène Boukaïla, VISA Scum Bitch by Krista Papista, directed by Christos Panayiotou, which examines displacement and gentrification in Cyprus, and Gaming Tower by Lower Levant Company in collaboration with Faysal Mroueh and Copper Curios, presented in an expanded format with live music and performance.

Together, the works explore issues such as urban development, the financialisation of cities, colonialism, migration and the environmental crisis.
