The Democratic Rally (DISY) has called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the major wildfire in the Kalo Chorio firing range area and announced that it will bring the matter before parliament, alongside concerns about the operation of the CY Alert emergency warning system.
In a statement, the party said the fire endangered lives, property and the natural environment, causing significant disruption in neighbouring communities.
DISY said the circumstances under which the wildfire broke out should be examined thoroughly and without delay to determine what went wrong, whether established safety protocols were followed and whether any omissions or weaknesses occurred.
Questions over planning and coordination
According to the party, the incident raises legitimate concerns regarding planning, coordination and the timely taking of necessary decisions.
DISY also highlighted concerns about the performance of the CY Alert system, arguing that the timely notification of residents is a critical component of civil protection.
Matter to be raised in parliament
The party said it will request that both issues be examined by the House of Representatives in order to identify where improvements and regulatory changes may be needed.
"The Democratic Rally will seek examination of both issues in parliament, so that it can be determined where improvements and adjustments are required and contribute constructively to advancing them," the statement said.
DISY also expressed its support for residents of the affected communities and thanked members of the emergency services, volunteers and all those involved in tackling the wildfire.
