A sweeping demand for the country to operate under the rule of law rather than a “mafia state” is set out in a new statement by AKEL, following the findings of the Anti-Corruption Authority on the book Mafia State. At the same time, the party recalls Monday’s planned protest in Nicosia outside the Legal Service.
According to the statement, the Authority’s findings reveal part of “the decay and corruption of the Anastasiades system” and “the feast built on the backs of the Cypriot people”.
“Impunity and cover-up cannot continue,” the statement says, calling for the removal of the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General in order to allow for an “independent and unimpeachable criminal investigation” and the assignment of responsibility before the courts.
The statement also stresses that “the Anastasiades system must be dismantled” and places responsibility on the former President of the Republic and DISY, accusing them of attempting to cover up and suppress the issue.
“This battle against the Anastasiades system concerns every citizen. The mockery and insult to our intelligence cannot continue, with Nicos Anastasiades demanding answers the other way around, and DISY calling for everyone to remain silent so that the cover-up network can do its work. It is a universal demand of the Cypriot people that our country be governed by the rule of law and not by a ‘mafia state’,” it states.
It adds that “it is a universal demand of the Cypriot people that the country be governed by the rule of law and not by a mafia state.”
At the same time, the call for mobilisation is addressed “to every citizen who demands accountability, transparency and punishment of those responsible.” The demonstration is scheduled for Monday, June 22, at 6:30 pm, outside the Legal Service in Nicosia.
