Cyprus' Civil Defence Force has issued a series of self-protection guidelines following the Orange Weather Warning for severe thunderstorms, possible hail and strong winds.
Flood prevention measures
Residents are advised to:
- Check that drains and gutters are clear and functioning properly.
- Remove valuable items from basements in flood-prone areas.
- Secure tanks, solar heaters and other objects that could be displaced by water.
- Prepare sandbags if their property is at risk of flooding.
- Avoid unnecessary travel and staying in underground areas during periods of heavy rainfall.
During flooding
If inside a building:
- Leave basements immediately and move to higher ground.
If outdoors:
- Do not attempt to cross flooded roads on foot, by bicycle, motorcycle or car.
- Turn back if you encounter a flooded route.
- Abandon a vehicle if it becomes trapped by floodwaters.
- Stay away from power lines and areas affected by landslides.
After flooding
Authorities recommend:
- Avoiding flooded areas, which may remain dangerous.
- Not obstructing emergency services.
- Limiting phone use to essential calls.
- Ensuring the area is declared safe before returning for clean-up operations.
- Turning off electricity and water supplies before beginning repairs.
Strong winds and tornado risk
Residents should also:
- Secure outdoor furniture, flowerpots and loose objects.
- Keep doors and windows closed.
- Avoid coastal areas and unnecessary outdoor activities.
- Stay away from large trees, signs, balconies and structures that could collapse or shed debris.
For people caught outdoors during a tornado or waterspout event, Civil Defence advises moving away from its path or, if escape is impossible, lying flat in a low-lying area while protecting the head.
Advice for employers
Employers are urged to take appropriate measures to protect workers carrying out outdoor duties, including suspending activities at construction sites where necessary.
