Employers' representative highlights resilience and AI challenges in the workplace

Cyprus has remained a safe and stable destination for investment and tourism despite successive crises, supported by strong institutions, the rule of law and its equal standing within the European Union, according to Michalis Antoniou, Director General of the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB).

Speaking at the Annual Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Antoniou addressed the plenary session on behalf of Cypriot employers. The conference is due to conclude on 12 June.

According to an OEB statement, the conference agenda includes issues of major importance to the modern world of work, with particular emphasis on the challenges and opportunities created by artificial intelligence for economies, businesses and employment.

Implications of AI

In his address, Antoniou noted that artificial intelligence represents a technological development whose capabilities are advancing at a rapid pace, while institutions require considerably more time to understand its implications, conduct consultations and build consensus on how it should be integrated into working life.

He stressed that this reality does not diminish the importance of social dialogue. Instead, he argued, it makes such dialogue more necessary than ever, requiring it to be faster, more evidence-based and more adaptable in order to respond effectively to developments and produce balanced decisions.

The Cypriot delegation also includes senior officer Polyvios Polyviou and labour relations and social policy officer Elena Polyviou from the OEB's Department of Labour Relations and Social Policy.
