The contract for the construction of the School of Marine Sciences, Technology and Sustainable Development of the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) in Larnaca is set to be signed later this month, paving the way for the city's first public university faculty.
The Municipality of Larnaca announced that the contract-signing ceremony will take place on Thursday, 24 September, at 11am in the main events hall on the sixth floor of the municipal offices.
The announcement follows the completion of the tender evaluation process, with the contract awarded to Cyfield Construction Ltd for €10.934 million plus VAT.
Funding and timetable
Funding for the project will come through the utilisation of resources from an existing loan secured by TEPAK from the European Investment Bank.
Construction works are expected to commence in October 2026, with a contractual completion period of 22 months.
Provided no unforeseen issues arise during construction, the new faculty is expected to be completed by late August 2028.
A foundation stone ceremony is also scheduled for 30 October, with President Nikos Christodoulides expected to attend.
Mackenzie location
The new faculty will be built in the Mackenzie area of Larnaca, behind the existing municipal parking area serving the beachfront leisure zone.
According to the municipality, the School of Marine Sciences, Technology and Sustainable Development will cover a total area of 4,960 square metres of enclosed and covered space.
The building will be two storeys high and will include:
- Lecture theatres.
- Classrooms.
- Meeting rooms.
- Offices for academic staff and students.
- Specialised laboratories.
- Advanced information technology infrastructure.
- Facilities supporting distance learning.
Landscaping and environmental upgrades will also be carried out around the site.
Two academic departments
The new faculty will consist of two academic departments:
- Department of Marine Sciences and Technology.
- Department of Sustainable Development.
Once fully developed, the school's programmes are expected to generate a student population of approximately 500 students in Larnaca.
The faculty will become TEPAK's eighth school and is expected to begin operating in autumn 2028.
The project represents a significant milestone for Larnaca, which will host its first public university faculty as part of the city's broader educational and urban development plans.
