George Karatzias, the newly appointed chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), has identified investor protection, effective supervision and the continued development of Cyprus' capital market as the regulator's main priorities.
In his first public remarks following his appointment, Karatzias said assuming the presidency of the commission was both an honour and a significant responsibility.
Focus on trust and market integrity
Karatzias said CySEC plays a central role in safeguarding transparency, market integrity and the proper functioning of the financial sector.
He noted that rapidly changing market conditions continue to create new challenges and opportunities, making the commission's role increasingly important in maintaining investor confidence and strengthening Cyprus' international credibility as a financial centre.
"Our priority will be to ensure effective and modern supervision, strengthen investor protection and promote a framework that enhances transparency, innovation and the sustainable development of the capital market," he said.
Commitment to effective oversight
The new chairman stressed that strong regulatory oversight is essential to preserving trust in financial markets.
He said the commission would continue to work towards ensuring that market participants operate within clear rules and standards, while supporting an environment conducive to growth and innovation.
Working with the board and staff
Karatzias said he intends to carry out his duties with determination and a clear strategic vision.
He pledged close cooperation with the commission's vice-chairman, board members and staff to strengthen the institution and reinforce the credibility of Cyprus' capital market.
"Together, we will work consistently, effectively and with dedication to further strengthen the institution and safeguard the reliability of the Cypriot capital market," he said.
The appointment comes as CySEC continues to oversee a financial sector facing evolving regulatory, technological and international market challenges.
