The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation has called for the urgent examination of 278 potentially dangerous buildings, many of which are listed or considered architecturally significant.
It said the necessary safety work must proceed without compromising the district’s architectural and cultural heritage.
Dangerous buildings identified
As part of its responsibilities, the organisation has carried out an extensive survey and assessment of dangerous buildings throughout the Larnaca district.
The inspections identified 278 listed or architecturally notable buildings requiring further examination.
The organisation subsequently sent a letter to the director of the Department of Town Planning and Housing, outlining the findings and providing details of the properties concerned.
Priority requested for applications
The organisation has asked to be informed which of the 278 cases already have applications pending for consent to carry out work and which have received the necessary approval for work to begin.
It called on the department’s Cultural Heritage Conservation Branch to prioritise the relevant applications so that necessary interventions can proceed without delay.
The aim, it said, is to protect lives and property while also preserving the architectural and cultural heritage of the district.
Public safety remains the priority
The organisation said it expects an immediate response from the department so that the cases can be examined as a priority and appropriate solutions pursued where necessary.
It added that protecting human life and public safety remains its highest priority.
The organisation said it will continue implementing its dangerous buildings management plan, stepping up inspections and strengthening cooperation with all relevant authorities.
